The 17th Virgin Islands Board of Education Reflects on Historical Achievements

The 17th Virgin Islands Board of Education takes great pleasure in memorializing the historic milestone achieved by our people one hundred years ago. The St. Croix Labor Union was the first legally organized and legally recognized association of working people in the entire Caribbean region. The Union was founded on November 1, 1915, by the brilliant Crucian, David Hamilton Jackson, with Ralph deChabert as Vice President and C.R.T. Brow as the bonded and certified treasurer. On Monday, January 23, 1916, David Hamilton Jackson announced the landmark strike that would successfully raise the wages of the working people of St. Croix by one hundred percent.
